Craig wanted a puppy.
We already had two BIG, old dogs and were about to move and were “downsizing”….. and he wanted a puppy.
I didn’t really want a puppy right then, but I was scrolling through Facebook on March 3, 2015 and I saw this…
She just turned one.
She was deaf.
She had debilitating anxiety.
She stole my heart.
I’ll save her mega-long how-she-came-to-be-a-smidt love story for future blog posts…. But for now, I simply just want to celebrate the fact that my sweet, special needs, amazing, crazy, loving, super-soft, silly, anxiety-ridden, sassy-pants, precious baby girl and littlest great dane is now TWO YEARS OLD!!!
*cue the big, weepy mama tears
In one year she moved from GA to TN to MO and is now a total city-slicker! She has more insta-followers than most humans and is working so hard at being better about making new friends.
She is completely terrified of the thug city squirrels that live in our backyard and HATES the trash truck that goes down our back alley…. But she loves our cute, old house and hanging out with me on the top level when I work. She has walked onto busy S. Grand twice since we moved to St Louis and several times now she has walked the five blocks to Tower Grove Park and played in the grass and leaves before running us back home!
We NEVER thought either of those adventures would be possible, so we’re pretty proud parents!
She loves… I mean LOVES playing with balls. She doesn’t need any help at all and she can wreck a nice, presentable living room like nothing you have ever seen while playing with said balls! Yep, it’s quite a sight and you can’t help but smile because she has SO. MUCH. FUN!
She loves going in the car and barking at the Starbucks baristas. Her favorite show is Grey’s Anatomy, but she also loves watching a good baseball game. Her favorite thing ever is when all three of her people are in the same room with her and she can jump from lap to lap getting all the snuggles she needs…. And more.
Life with her is 110% like having an autistic toddler. She is 100 pounds of hard, wonderful, messy, silly, frustrating and perfectly ridiculous LOVE. She is amazing and I can’t wait for you to know her and love her. I hope she impacts your life just as beautifully as she has ours.
I really think that she enjoyed her special day!
She got to sleep in and play with aaaaaaaall of her balls as much as she wanted. We went on a little adventure to our back alley for a little birthday photo shoot. She had never spent time exploring back there before so there were soooooo many good smells to keep her occupied! When dad got home, she got her presents (more, newer balls) and some special birthday cookies from Pets in the City. She really liked those!
These delicious cookies (shown in top right and middle right of the birthday collage) are made by Wags in a Bag and I was so jazzed to learn that they are made with all-natural, human-grade ingredients that supports the Center for Head Injury Services, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that helps people with brain injuries, autism or other disabilities lead full and productive lives. So… buying these super cute, ap-paw-tizing treats for Luna also meant that we were helping people with disabilities rebuild their lives and shape brighter futures. I know Luna feels pretty good about that!
Then we took Luna out for one of her favorite things…. a car ride ALL by herself… her furry big brothers stayed home. Oh, she was so happy! She got to bark at the Starbucks workers and even a few pedestrians on S. Grand! We went back home for some snuggle time and she slept HARD all night and into the next day.
We love that our little dog wonder is two and can’t wait to see what this next year will have in store for her! We hope to visit a dog park or two, learning more sign commands, and maybe spend a little more time getting comfortable on S. Grand! We know she can do it!
Dear friends, thanks for celebrating her special day with us!
OH! …and be sure to follow her on Instagram! (@looneybellaluna) xoxo
